Frequently Asked Questions

Banking

  • How does the banking system work?
  • Initially, banks were to be unique to each individual city or zone. In other words, wherever a banker was, a unique inventory would exist.

That has been changed, and banking in EverQuest 2 is now very similar to banking in EverQuest Live. Your bank is your bank, no matter what zone you are accessing it from.

Individualized banks were removed because the development team felt they put an unnecessary burden on the player. Basically, it just wasn't fun.

    Source Link

  • How much storage space will banks provide?
  • While the exact number is unknown, storage space will be a commodity. Increased storage is one of the benefits of player housing. As a means to increase bank space, there will also be bank chests. These will be very heavy (so it is inefficient to carry them around), but they can have up to 36 slots each.

Beta & Release

  • How do I become a beta tester? *
  • Information regarding the EverQuest II beta test will be made available on the official website. However, it is important to note that many of our EverQuest Legends subscribers will be the first to experience EverQuest II when it enters beta. We will be giving preference to longtime EverQuest Legends subscribers, so if you're interested in EverQuest Legends, sign up now. After EverQuest Legends players, longtime EverQuest subscribers will be eligible for a phase of the beta as well. We realize this information is somewhat vague, and the only reason for that is that we don't have an exact date yet for beta testing, but we will in the future.

UPDATE: Moorgard made it clear that Legends players will be AMONG those chosen for the first phase of public beta, but not the ONLY players chosen.

In addition, current EverQuest subscribers who purchase the Lords of EverQuest real-time strategy game and maintain their EverQuest subscription will be allowed into a special phase of beta after Legends players but prior to any open beta phase.

Update: The beta application will be available on May 03, 2004 at 10:00AM PDT.

    Source Link

  • If I private message my credentials to Moorgard will it help me get in Beta?
  • No, but it will invoke the furious wrath of the eqii.com moderators upon you, possibly resulting in swift and merciless destruction.

Or perhaps even worse, you will be subjected to the dreaded "Red Text Of Death."
  • When will we see beta for EQ2?
  • June 2004
  • Will there be an open beta?
  • It has been told to us that there will be an open beta. How long it will go for, or how it will work exactly is, as of yet, unknown to us. Moorgard has stated that there will be several phases to beta, and that the last will be quite large. He has also asked that we prepare ourselves for the reality that some of us will get in, and some will not.

    Source Link

  • How will we know beta has started?
  • The beginning of beta will be displayed first on the Official Sony Everquest 2 website. You can also continue to check here for your latest beta info, as we will post an update about it as soon as we are filled in with more information.
  • When is EQII slated to release? *
  • EverQuest II will launch in 2004.

    Source Link

  • Will they actually hit the release date?
  • They have assured us that they are indeed on schedule, and we will be one of the first to know if things are not going as planned. The game will ship in 2004.

    Source Link

  • Why are Legends and Lords of EverQuest players being given priorty in beta testing?
  • Players on the Legends server are being allowed into the beta as a part of their premium subscription package. It is simply a perk that goes along with the Legends package.

The Lords of EverQuest players are being invited to a special phase of beta as part of a cross promotional marketing program to push EverQuest products.

Characters

  • Can I customize my character's appearance? *
  • Yes. Players will be able to extensively customize the character's facial features, and can individualize their appearance by equipping a wide variety of armor, weapons, and other items.

    Source Link

  • Can I transfer my characters that I created in the original EQ to EQII? *
  • Because of our extensively redesigned game engine, existing EverQuest characters cannot be transferred to EverQuest II. However, EverQuest players can tie their new character to their existing one through our heritage system, carrying on their family name and receiving heirlooms linked to their EverQuest experience.

    Source Link

  • Will there be twinking in EverQuest II?
  • In short: No

While we are no longer sure about the exact mechanisms in place to stop twinking, we do know that it has been a focus for change.
  • Will there be any restrictions on having good and evil characters on the same account and same server?
  • No, not on standard servers.

    Source Link

  • Can I have more than one character on a single server?
  • Yes. While the final number is unknown, you will be able to have more than one character on any single server.

    Source Link

  • Can I change my character's appearance after I am finished creating him/her?
  • There will be minor ways to alter your character's appearance once the game has begun. But you will never be able to totally abandon the looks you choose at character creation. It is likely that hair styles and colors will be customizable after creation, but facial features themselves will not be.

    Source Link

  • What options do I have during character creaton?
  • When you create your character in EQII, you will choose a race, customize your features, and create a name. Everything else will be handled later in the game.

    Source Link

Classes

  • What base classes are available to me?
  • You will not pick a class upon character creation.

However, at level 3, you will be able to pick a base class from the following options: Fighter, Priest, Mage, Scout, and Artisan.
  • How will the Class Tree work?
  • At level 3 you will choose between five base choices. At level 10 you will have 3 more choices to choose from that are dependant upon your first choice. At level 20 you will make your final decision between 2 other choices to settle upon your final class.
  • Will the class tree be known at release?
  • Yes the class tree will be released previous to the game being released. It will also be viewable in game, so if you know what direction you want to take you will be able to from the very beginning.
  • How many class combinations are there?
  • There will be 48 total class distinctions available via the new branching class structure. There are 28 final classes.
  • Will Race come into play as far as Classes are concerned?
  • In EverQuest 2, any race can become any class. While the inherent traits of some races will allow them to excel at certain professions, there is no restriction on what class you can play. So does that mean a troll can become a paladin? A high elf can become a shadow knight? A dark elf can become a ranger? Yes, yes, and yes.

    Source Link

  • Will all of the EQLive classes be available in EverQuest II?
  • No. Many of the names and roles have changed, and some are no longer present. Others are no longer final classes, but secondary classes that branch into the player's final role.

    Source Link

  • Where can I find updated class info?
  • The class discussion forum has a regularly updated post featuring all available information regarding the class tree:

    http://www.eqii.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=4532

    Source Link

  • Will my class be welcome in groups?
  • If the archetype system works, definitely. EQII is being designed so that any character from a given archetype is equally effecient at performing the primary role of his/her archetype as any other class from the same branch. While each class will be equally skilled at their primary role, they will also have individual skills and attributes that give them their own special flavor.

    Source Link

Combat

  • Will there be player-versus-player (PvP) combat? *
  • Just as the original EverQuest was geared towards PvE (player vs. environment), EverQuest II has a similar focus. PvP combat will be possible, yet in a way that does not negatively affect non-PvP players.

    Source Link

  • How will combat work?
  • When fighting, you will pick a specific location to attack a MOB. Combat in general will require more in the way of tactics than in EverQuest.
  • What are "locked" encounters?
  • EQII is implementing a system of locked combat encounters. This means that once a player/group engages a mob, that mob is locked and no outside player/group may interfere. Players may unlock the encounter at any time to seek help from outside parties, but at a significant penalty to the loot and experience given by the encountered mob.
  • What is "combat speed?"
  • When players in EQII enter combat, they begin to move more slowly. They will no longer be able to quickly run far distances away from mobs. Among other things, this will help to prevent the tactic of "kiting" in EQII.
  • How will the locked encounter system affect powerleveling?
  • It is likely that the locked system will eliminate powerleveling as we knew it in EQLive.
  • How are locked encounters "unlocked?"
  • Groups may unlock an encounter to receive help at any time by pressing the /yell key.

    Source Link

  • What is the maximum group size in EQII?
  • EQII will feature the same 6 player group system that EQLive did.

    Source Link

  • Will EQII feature raiding similar to that found in EQLive?
  • There will be raiding content in EQII, but there will be a hard cap of 24 players max on any given encounter. The goal is to remove the "zergling rush" from the EQLive style of raiding and return such encounters to a system based on player skill.

    Source Link

  • Will EQII try to remove soloing?
  • Absolutely not. Specific content is being designed for soloers. This will take the form of specific areas to solo mobs and unique soloing quests. Each class will be able to solo effectively. The system is being designed specifically for those who only have an hour or two to commit at any given time.

Grouping will remain the fastest and most rewarding way to gain experience and loot, however.

    Source Link

  • Will ranged combat such as archery be present in EQII?
  • Ranged combat will be a more specialized combat skill. Certain classes (particularly those in the Scout archetype) will have access to powerful ranged attacks and combat arts. These ranged attacks will not be unlimited, and will have a negative affect on the character's stamina.

    Source Link

Death

  • How will death work?
  • The death system has gone through several changes since it was first talked about during the 2002 E3 event. The way the system currently stands is this: You will have no corpse in EQ2, and when you die you have an option to be resurrected where you died by a player with the appropriate spell. If you decide against being resurrected, you will respawn at your bind point with your items decayed. This system is still subject to change.

EQII.Com

Faction

  • What role will faction play in EQII?
  • In the words of Moorgard:

Factions mean a lot more in EQ2 than just the ability to walk around in a city. There can be tangible benefits from certain factions having a lot of strength in the community.

Being a Fighter, a Qeynos Monk might think it obvious to support the Qeynos Guard faction. However, a player (or guild, for that matter) might decide that the benefits of having a strong merchant economy is more important.

While the five factions have obvious links to the archetype system, you aren't locked into supporting any specific faction. It's up to you to decide which you want to make stronger.

How you do that and what exactly the potential benefits will be, I leave for you to discover in game.

    Source Link

  • Where may I find info about the factions found in Qeynos and Freeport?
  • The official EQII site offers a brief description of the available factions: http://everquest2.station.sony.com/lore.jsp

Gameplay

  • What is the goal of the game? *
  • The primary goal of EverQuest II is to create and advance a unique roleplaying persona within the world of Norrath. This may be accomplished a number of ways, including solving mysterious quests, slaying vicious monsters, and crafting powerful relics.

    Source Link

  • How do I communicate with other players? *
  • Communication will take place within the user interface (UI) chat windows.

    Source Link

  • What if I don't have a lot of time to play? Will the game still be fun for someone like me? *
  • One of the main goals for EverQuest II is to design methods of gameplay that will facilitate both casual and hardcore players.

    Source Link

  • Will EQII feature custom animations and gestures? *
  • Yes. Players will be able to "emote" via chat, as well as through their character's animations.

    Source Link

  • What types of environments can we expect to see in EQII? *
  • The EverQuest II environments will vary greatly, ranging from lush forests teeming with flora and fauna to barren desert wastelands. While players will recognize certain names and locations from EverQuest, many of them have undergone startling changes in the last 500 years.
  • What is "instancing?"
  • To put it simply, instancing is the process of creating a unique copy of a standard zone layout so that multiple groups of players may explore the same content simultaneously. Instancing is currently being used in the EQLive expansion Lost Dungeons of Norrath. The exact implementation of instancing in EQII has yet to be revealed, but it will likely be on a much smaller scale than LDoN.

    Source Link

  • Will we be able to get drunk?
  • Of course. And apparently with some stunning visual effects.

    Source Link

  • What is this indirect PVP (iPVP) I keep hearing about?
  • Indirect PVP is a competition between opposing players or factions that does not directly involve combat. EQII will have a complex system of iPVP that allows players and guilds to advance through the social structure of their chosen city. Participation in this system will be optional.

    Source Link

  • Will I still be able to fish in EQII?
  • Yes, fishing is still a passtime in EQII. There will also be other ways to gather valuable resources in your leisure time.

General

  • What is EverQuest II (EQII)? *
  • EverQuest II is an online universe that exists parallel to the hugely successful gaming phenomenon EverQuest®. Featuring breathtaking graphics and a vast, beautiful game world to explore, EverQuest II sets new standards in graphical realism as players are immersed in the game's powerful epic storyline with thousands of players online.

Set 500 years after EverQuest, EverQuest II is a new and different game experience in a world marred by a series of massive cataclysms. Players enter this world by creating their own unique character from 16 races and 48 classes, using a powerful customization system for unprecedented player individuality.

Players will encounter hundreds of creatures as they travel across the majestic landscape of rolling hills, barren deserts, dense forests, and bustling cities. Thousands of new items, hundreds of new spells, and unparalleled adventures await all who enter the world of EverQuest II.

    Source Link

  • Is EQII an expansion of the original EverQuest? *
  • EverQuest II is not an expansion, but rather a parallel universe that continues the ongoing history of Norrath and its inhabitants. EverQuest II will introduce a number of features that have never been utilized in massively multiplayer games.

    Source Link

  • Will a monthly fee be required to play? *
  • Yes, the monthly subscription fee will be announced at a later date.

    Source Link

  • How will EQII differ from other massively multiplayer games? *
  • At the time of launch, the EverQuest II team will have over four years of massively multiplayer gaming experience to build upon. Our plans for the combat, quest, and, tradeskill systems-just to name a few-along with our new 3D engine, will take massively multiplayer gaming to new heights.

    Source Link

  • Once I subscribe, should I expect new content be added to the game? *
  • Absolutely. The world will grow and evolve as the story of Norrath unfolds.

    Source Link

  • Is the same development team that created EverQuest the creators of EQII? *
  • A number of key original team members make up a portion of the EverQuest II team. With the size and scope of the EverQuest II project, it was necessary to expand the team from its original size.

    Source Link

  • What are the game's system requirements? *
  • Operating System: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
  • Processor: 1GHz or greater
  • RAM: 512 MB
  • Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible. Pixel shader and vertex shader compatible hardware with 64 MB of texture memory
  • Sound Card: DirectSound compatible audio hardware

    Source Link

  • Why is the flow of EverQuest II information so slow?
  • Information is coming in at a slow trickle to build up steam for the EverQuest 2 release. The developers feel that releasing large amounts of info at one time will ultimately hurt the building anticipation for beta and release.

    Source Link

  • Will EverQuest II be coming out for any platforms other than the PC?
  • There isn't a short and sweet answer for this one.

EverQuest is on its way to Mac OS X right now. This will serve for testing purposes to see if it is a viable market for future Sony Online games. If it is found to be so, then it is expected that EverQuest II will eventually make it to that Macintosh platform.
  • What is a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG)? *
  • A massively multiplayer online game is a video game where a player connects through the Internet to a persistent virtual world, joining with hundreds of thousands of other gamers in a shared experience. While many modern computer games support multiplayer gaming, very few are designed to support the thousands of simultaneous players found within the worlds of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Instead of starting a game on a local network and inviting a few friends to play, EverQuest II uses the Internet to connect to SOE world servers, allowing an almost unlimited number of players to join from all across the globe.

    Source Link

  • What is an RPG? *
  • RPG stands for roleplaying game. RPGs are much broader experiences than traditional video games, which usually force players down a very narrow path. In a game such as EverQuest II, there is no "winning" per se; players create a character and are then free to make their own way through the game world. The EverQuest II experience varies from player to player. Some players may choose to take on epic quests, slaying evil creatures and reaping magical rewards. Others may choose to specialize in a tradeskill and trade items with other players. Each player defines his or her own character's destiny in the lands of EverQuest II.

    Source Link

  • Where can I find up-to-date information on EQII?
  • You can find all the latest at EverQuest-2.Com as well as the official website, EverQuest2.Com.
  • Who is Moorgard?
  • Steve "Moorgard" Danuser is the current Community Manager for the EverQuest 2 project. Moorgard interacts with the community on several message boards, clarifying misconceptions about the EQ2 project and occasionally releasing new info.

You might be familiar with Moorgard's work at Mobhunter, an editorial/discussion site created to cover issues with EQLive and the MMORPG genre.

Moorgard began work with SOE in August of 2003.

    Source Link

  • Will I be able to play EQII over a 56k modem?
  • Yes. If you were able to play EQLive, it is likely that you will be able to play EQII even better. The game has been optimized a bit more this time around.

    Source Link

  • How many levels will there be in EQII?
  • At launch there will be 50 levels. The game is being designed so that future expansion could reasonably lift the final level cap to 200, if designers choose to do so.

    Source Link

  • Will EQII have "hell" levels?
  • No, the design of EQII's experience system does not include "hell" levels a la EQLive.
  • Will EQII feature AAXP or other forms of alternate advancement?
  • Yes, there will be paths of advancement beyond the standard level and skill progression. These paths might include ways to obtain spells, items, or other abilities. The system is not a direct copy of the EQLive AA progression; it is a design unique to EQII.

    Source Link

  • Will I be able to purchase EverQuest II prepaid game cards?
  • Yes. EQII game cards will be available at release.

    Source Link

  • Will EQII feature the 1st person camera view?
  • Yes, EQII will feature a mouse wheel camera control that allows the player to freely move between first and third person views. Other traditional views are likely to be included as well.

    Source Link

Graphics

  • What 3D engine will EQII use? *
  • EverQuest II utilizes a proprietary 3D engine, which was developed in-house by the EQII programming team. The EQII engine takes full advantage of current cutting edge 3D hardware, as well as future hardware technology.
  • Why does the EQII framerate fluctuate so much in the available videos?
  • The most obvious reason is that the game has yet to be fully optimized. Improvements to the graphics engine and optimization are made regularly, and as release nears, the quality of footage available will likely increase significantly.

On a few occasions, EQII has been demonstrated in public at full detail with a few placeholder graphical components. These placeholder components, such as the "rain" seen in a few videos, have not been optimized.

    Source Link

  • The lighting in some of the screen shots seems a bit... off. Is that normal?
  • No. Many of the screens we have seen are in areas that have incomplete lighting at this point in development. In addition, developers taking the screens have access to GM commands that create an artificial light source. This has caused many of the areas to have a "plastic" look to them.

    Source Link

Guilds etc.

  • What are guilds, families and fellowships?
  • Guilds, families and fellowships are the new player community models to replace the singular model of guilds in Everquest 1.
  • What is the purpose of a Guild?
  • A guild is the most competitive of the three organizational structures available in EQ2. There will be forms of political competition (guilds supporting their faction within cities) as well as other types of competition. Guilds will also have benefits unique to them, such as guild housing within their pledged city.

    Source Link

  • What is the purpose of a Family?
  • A family is the second organizational structure open to Everquest 2. It is like a less competitive form of guild. A family will be identified by a surname which all members of a family will share.
  • What is the purpose of a Fellowship?
  • A fellowship is the smallest orginizational structure available to Everquest 2 players. The maximum number of a fellowship is 6 characters, each which will require its own account (Fellowships will be able to identify Alts and disallow them). This group is to help players stay of similiar level, as it is a way of splitting up experience between the members to a certain degree even when members are offline. If characters within a fellowship are of hugely varying levels, the experience shared will be scaled significantly down providing a far smaller benefit than that those of a similar level would recieve.
  • Will I be able to participate in a guild, family and fellowship?
  • Yes, players will be allowed to be a member of all three structures (one of each) simultaneously, making it far easier to remain with friends while choosing other orginizations that suit your playstyle.
  • My guild doesn't want to be highly competitive in the political meta game of EQII. Can we still function as a guild?
  • Yes. You can have a guild that is just like your EQ guild if you choose. The costs for doing so will not be prohibitive or punitive. You will not be forced to take part in the competitive aspects of guild life.

    Source Link

Hardware

  • What type of computer should I build/buy for EverQuest II?
  • While it is too early to think about buying a machine for the game's release, Moorgard has let us know that the best machine for EQII will be "the best you can afford." EQII is being designed with future technology in mind and will have hefty requirements to run at full detail.

    Source Link

  • What type of graphics card should I buy?
  • There are any number of options available from different companies, but the card must be able to fully support DirectX 9 features.

    Source Link

History & Lore

  • When does EverQuest II take place?
  • EQII takes place in the Age of Destiny, a time in the future of EverQuest.
  • So where is Luclin?
  • Luclin went *BOOM*. Although we do not yet know what caused the explosion, we do know that pieces of the shattered moon are still visible in Norrath's sky, while others crashed to the planet's surface, destroying much of the known world.

    Source Link

  • How recent was Luclin's explosion?
  • According to Moorgard, the explosion occurred 10-15 years prior to EverQuest II.

    Source Link

  • Won't there be some problems with all of these races living closely together in two cities?
  • Absolutely. Moorgard has hinted that the Iksar and High Elves in particular are not taking well to their new found neighbors. This will likely be a branching storyline throughout the game.

    Source Link

  • Will dragons once again play a significant role in EQII's lore?
  • Absolutely. Moorgard has hinted that dragons in EQII will once again become major forces in the world of Norrath.

    Source Link

Housing

  • What types of housing will there be?
  • There will be two types of housing: free-standing homes and instanced appartment style rooms. Both guilds and individual players will be able to access instanced housing, but obtaining the limited free-standing homes will be tough for all but the highest ranking of guilds.

    Source Link

  • What are the benefits to housing?
  • The full benefits of Guild Housing are as of yet unknown. Player housing will have two primary benefits that we know of: First and foremost is that with storage space being a commodity in Everquest 2, player housing will give you increased storage space. The second benefit is that tradeskill utilities will be able to be placed inside housing allowing for easier tradeskilling.

Items

  • What is item decay all about?
  • We have been told there will be item decay in Everquest II. Unfortunately, since we first heard about it, the proposed systems surrounding it and the implementation of it have undergone many revisions to the point where we can only speculate exactly how it will be implemented. Last time we were informed, items would only decay with death.
  • Are items going to be actual geometry or just skins?
  • Many items will be geometry. This means that they will physically exist on your character rather than just changing the look a little bit.

It can open up options for things such as layering clothing and much more dynamic and realistic animations.

These two concept images hint at the ability of layering equipment:

    Northman Male 1 | Northman Male 2

  • Will there be Epic weapons?
  • We don't know yet.
  • Will there be crossbows?
  • Yes.

    Source Link

  • Will crafting take away from the mob dropped loot available to players?
  • No. Mobs will still have loot tables that include ready to use items such as breastplates and swords, but will also drop components that may be used by artisans to create other items.

    Source Link

  • Will there be visible cloaks and hoods in EQII?
  • Not in the initial release. The art team is focusing on items that they feel will better suit all EQII players and that will cause a minimum number of graphical problems.

    Source Link

  • Will items have level restrictions?
  • Simple answer: Yes.

    Source Link

  • Will there be "NO DROP" items in EQII?
  • Few items in EQII will not be tradeable. Level restrictions will take care of the problems that "NO DROP" was supposed to solve.

    Source Link

  • Will some high end equipment be immune to decay?
  • Yes. Some high end equipment will be immune from forms of decay that will affect most of the game's equipment. The best items in the game probably will not wear out.

    Source Link

Music & Sound

  • What type of music will EQII feature?
  • EQII will feature a fully orchestrated score that has been composed by Laura Karpman. The score was recently recorded in Prague.

    Source Link

  • Will EQII have the "ding?"
  • Yes. The same leveling "ding" from EQLive will be present in EQII.

    Source Link

Quests

  • What type of quests can we expect to see?
  • In Everquest there were several types of quests introduced. The Epic quests, the "Coldain Shawl" and the "Dain Ring" quests. These quests were very long and built upon a series of challenging steps. We have been told that we will see all of this Everquest II and more.

    Source Link

  • Will there be 'branching' style quests?
  • Yes. There were a few quests of this style in the original Everquest (most notably the Rogue Epic which has several different endings) but we will see far more quests that depend on player choice in Everquest II.

    Source Link

  • Will we have a better way to keep track of quests?
  • You will have a quest journal that shows what quests you're currently working on, who gave them to you, and what you still need to do to complete them. If you decide you don't want to finish a quest you started, you can move it to the "inactive" page of the journal. That way if you decide later that you want to pick it up again, you will be able to do so.

Races

  • What happened to the Vah Shir?
  • Their moon has left the area and they can no longer played.
  • What is a Kerran?
  • The Kerra (that's the plural of Kerran) are cat people from Kerra island. They are basically the replacement for Vah Shir.
  • What races will I be able to play?
  • The races you will be able to play are:

    01. Barbarian
    02. Dark Elf
    03. Dwarf
    04. Erudite
    05. Frogluk
    06. Gnome
    07. Half Elf
    08. Halfling
    09. High Elf
    10. Human
    11. Iksar
    12. Kerran
    13. Ogre
    14. Ratonga
    15. Troll
    16. Wood Elf
  • How many races will EverQuest II have?
  • There are 16 confirmed races for the release of EQ2.
  • What are the Ratonga?
  • They are a small Rat creature who is more inclined to the evil professions. Their lore is as of yet unknown.
  • Will my race determine if I am good or evil?
  • Just as in EQLive, some races are good, some are evil, and some others are neutral. Some races can be either good, evil, or neutral based upon their class choice. Neutral players will eventually have to pledge to either Qeynos or Freeport, however.

    Source Link

  • Will there be experience penalties or bonuses applied to any particular race or class?
  • Simple answer: No.

Skills

  • What skills are in EQII and what do they do?
  • Last we heard, there will be 3 main skills that are used to improve your character:

Knowledge: Affects the level of items you can equip
Technique: Determines how well you can use weapons or items
Arts: Handles basic functions such as foraging and kicking

This may be inaccurate now, as it could have been changed during one the mechanic revisions, but is still based on the last confirmed information we were given.
  • Will there be 'discipline' style skills in Everquest II?
  • Yes. Melee classes will have special abilities called Arts. These powerful attacks provide each sub-class with unique combat techniques. Stamina will be tied into this, adding a mechanic of preservation, making the use of these skills far more strategic.

Spells

  • What kind of spell effects can we expect to see?
  • New spell effects will make the world more interesting. For example, Spirit of Bear will show the PC slowly morphing into a bear form and the Bonewall damage shield will show a cage of bones topped with skulls surrounding the NPC.
  • Will there be good and evil lines of spells for the same class?
  • The class system allows for exactly this type of flavor. The two sub-classes of a given class will have spell lines and abilities that make them equally effective but quite distinctive in style. Good and evil healers draw their abilities from different mystical sources, which will be reflected in the spells available to each.

  • Will casters be able to specialize by choosing certain magic paths?
  • Casters can specialize in certain magic paths which allow the player to individualize his or her character. This means members of the same sub-class can be distinctive and unique-they won't all be exactly the same.

  • How will buffs work in EQII?
  • Most buffs will be group based, meaning that players must remain grouped with the player that buffed them for the entire duration of the buff. It is likely that buffs will be dependent upon a concentration stat pool of the caster as well.

Starting Cities

  • What cities may I choose to start my character in?
  • The only two starting cities found in EQII will be Qeynos (for good aligned players) and Freeport (for those of an evil inclination). The two city mechanic is a central theme in EQII. Steve "Moorgard" Danuser: All races start in the same place: our tutorial. After that, race determines which city will initially accept you. Frogloks, Halflings, Dwarves, High Elves, and Wood Elves will be heading to Qeynos. Iksar, Trolls, Ogres, Ratonga, and Dark Elves will be taking up residence in Freeport. Kerra, Barbarians, Erudites, Gnomes, Half Elves, and Humans can choose which city to call home.

  • Will I be able to switch from Qeynos faction to Freeport faction (or vice versa) later in the game?
  • No. Once you have pledged your loyalty to a particular city, you are tied to it for the duration of your character's life.

  • Will I be able to group or guild with players from the opposing city?
  • Yes. There is no in-game mechanic that prevents the grouping or guilding of players from opposing cities.

  • Won't the newbie areas be really crowded since there are only two starting cities?
  • Hopefully they will be. The idea is to create a massive hub for all players of a given alignment. But newbie hunting zones are likely to be instanced, providing ample room for young players to gain experience without intruding on the territory of others.

Tradeskills

  • Will crafted items be comparable to items looted from mobs?
  • Yes, and in many cases even better. The top level of crafted items will be created with rare components that are dropped by uber mobs alongside the traditional loot that EverQuest Live players are familiar with.

  • Will tradeskills have an impact in EverQuest II?
  • Yes. Tradesman will be a pivotal mechanic in Everquest II.

There will be a brand-new trade and crafting system in EverQuest II. Players who want to advance by crafting alone will be able to but will not be able to pursue combat skills with that character. This will heavily effect the economy as the 'adventurer' players will depend heavily on the Tradesmen, who will in turn depend on the adventurers which will drive the economy.
  • Is there a Trade class?
  • Yes.

At level 6, you will be able to pick a base class from the following options: Fighter, Priest, Mage, Rogue, Tradesman.

This means there will be a heavy emphasis on tradeskills.
  • Will artisans have combat skills?
  • Yes, artisans will have basic melee skills, but they will not be comparable to Fighters or Scouts.

Transportation

  • What sort of transportation will be available to me?
  • Boats will be a primary form of travel in EQII. Players will be able to travel quickly from local docks or take part in missions for their local navy.

Mounts will not make it into the primary release, but are slated for future expansions.

  • What is the purpose of player controlled boats?
  • Boats will be a primary form of travel. Players will be able to book passage to known locations at the city docks and will be able to undertake missions on behalf of their local navy. Those who discover routes to remote regions will be using ships to carry their groups to new and dangerous adventures.

  • What happened to ports and other means of instant travel?
  • Around the time that the gods disappeared from the eyes of mortals, the wizard spires and druid rings stopped functioning, which disallowed mystical forms of transportation. Is there a connection between these events? Will there be a way to make such teleportation spells function again? Time will tell.

World

  • What areas of the world can we expect to see?
  • The world of Norrath as we know it in EQ2 will be significantly different than the world in EQ1. According to the lore, there was a great cataclysm when one of the Moons exploded leaving much of Everquest shattered. This means while we will see areas with possibly the same name as the areas in Everquest 1, they will be drastically changed. Exactly what continents/islands and areas will be availabld though, we do not yet know.
  • Will the world be dynamic?
  • This is an often asked question. It has been very strongly hinted that in several ways the world will be far more dynamic and affected by player actions, but we have yet to see any firm examples or explanations of how this will work.
  • Is it true there are only two starting cities now?
  • Yes, as far as we know, players will only be able to start in either Qeynos or Freeport, each city leaning towards a different alignment (good/evil) to decide where you end up. Other cities from Everquest 1 still exist, but will be seen in very different forms than they were in Everquest (due to the 'shattering' of Luclin).

Zones

  • Will there be zones in EQII?
  • Yes. However, load times will be much faster than they are in EverQuest.

  • What is all of this talk about MOBs zoning?
  • When Everquest 2 was originally announced, one of the proposed features was the ability for mobs to zone with players if they were chasing them. Mid 2003 that idea was announced to be scrapped. Mobs will no longer be able to zone with players. The reason for this was that while the technology was availble to them, there didn't seem to be a good point unless it was used in a specialized individual basis.

  • Will there be a Bazaar in EQII?
  • No. There will be no fixed Bazaar zone. But there will be an automated system for players to sell their goods.

  • Will I be able to revisit some of my favorite zones from EQLive?
  • Perhaps. Some zones from EQLive will still exist, although likely in a much altered form. One of the major themes of EQII is the rediscovery of this lost land.
