The Ins and Outs of Isle of Refuge for newcomers

This is a guide on how to get the most out of the time on Isle of Refuge. It is a spoiler so please do not read if you do not want to have it spoiled. It is not covering the part on The Far Journey, the ship.

Remember that you choose Good or Evil already at character creation. There is no way to change later except for the betrayal quest at level 15-19.

1. Arrival

You are dumped on the beach. Talk to Garven Tralk who is standing nearby. He will ask you what archetype you are so pay attention here, it's at this point you choose. He will also give you the first quest. When you have it, open the rack to the right of him, there are items you need there. A recommendation, do not do this quest now, see The Crabs below, also see about the beavers further below.

Do not forget to eat and drink, rightclick the food and drink in your inventory and choose Eat/Drink when hungry/thirsty. You will regen health and power faster.

2. The Crabs

You can see the crabs on the beach. Kill them until you get a chest drop with an item looking like some shards. Examine this item, it starts a quest. If you come near level 4 while hunting the crabs for the drop, disable combat experience so you do not outlevel the crabs, they will not drop chests if they turn grey. You do that by rightclicking the experience bar. It's worth it. You will also find that if you fulfil this quest you will also fulfil Garven's quest at the same time, one step is to kill a goblin so kill an invader.

Crabs also drop weapons.

Do not forget to enable combat experience but the game will remind you everytime you would have gained so you will not forget it.

3. The Collections

While hunting crabs you will find sparkling questionmarks on the ground. Doubleclick them to gather them. Examine them, that starts a collection quest. There are two collection quests on the Isle, shells and feathers. Collect them all, trade duplicates with other players. The NPC interested in these collections is standing on the beach north of the first one where you arrived.

3. Ebik's parts

On the same beach as the collector there is a gnome. Talk to him to get his quest. You are sent to find 3 items on the Isle. The first can be found between the bridge and the waterfall north of the bay. All of them looks like a sprocket wheel. The second can be found in the sea by swimming out to the little island exactly south-east from Ebik the gnome. The third can be found on the east side of The Chieftain's tree in the north.

4. The Newbie Armour

After having done Garven's quest he will tell you to go find another NPC depending on what archetype you chose. Mages go to Mizan, an erudite at the top of the mage tower, fighters go to Braksan, a dwarf just north-east of the tower, priests go to Nathinia, a human standing near the water north of the tower and scouts go to Vladiminn, a ratonga north-west of the tower. Talk to them, they have 4 quests for you, all with armour pieces as rewards.

Gruttoth invaders can be found in the area east of the tower, supply runners at the first camp in the east, agressors at the second camp north of the first, brutes north of this in the area with several camps. Gruttooth mystics are found southwest of the deer on the map, mire bogs at the spider on the map. Scouts sneak through the group of camps in the north-west.

The Orc Cave, the last of the quests, requires a group and the cave door can be found just east of the treehouse.

5. Other quests

Talk to Priestess Xaliea in the camp up to the left of the waterfalls on the map, she has a quest to kill skeletons for bone chips. Skeletons are found at Unlucky Recruit's End.

Skeletons drop an item that is a quest to kill a ghost pirate. The stone to click is just to the right of the two waterfalls on the map.

Dive down near the waterfall in the bay, rightclick a statue of a woman there, it is a quest to kill sharks.

A named goblin Siege Planner sometimes drops a quest to kill other goblins. He also drops a 6 slot bag.

You can buy a book from a merchant which is a quest to "learn" about goblins. The goblins drop the items needed for the quest.

6. For the Artisan

Do the artisan quests, talk to the guy at the entrance to the mage tower for these. To the left of him is a trapdoor to the tradeskill cellar for the quests. Make sure you have space in your inventory because he will give you a bag and a few items you need for the quest.

It is important to keep your harvesting skills at maximum because higher level areas require a minimum skill to be able to harvest in them. Spend as much time as you can gathering roots, foresting felled trees and mining unearthed rocks. Try to get skill level 35 in all. You can't skill up in trapping on the Isle though. Gathering shells and feathers increase skill too. Harvesting skills are important for Adventurers as well.

Roots spawn at the mage tower, just south of the main goblin camp, at the goblin mystics and outside the orc cave. Rocks spawn in the invader area, between the supply runners and the agressors, at the guard and merchant in northwest, just north of the treehouse and at the skeletons. Lumber spawn in the invader area, near the deer and spiders, near the ogre guard in northwest and just south of the treehouse.

7. Interesting items

There are a few items worth mentioning because most will never find them. One is a +2 agi cap dropped by the beavers in the water in the north. These beavers are level 1 so you have to kill them at level 3 if you want any drops.

The Siege planner and the Warmonger are named goblins in the main camp. They both drop 6 slot bags. They are lore so you can only carry one.

Named mobs drop items too. There is a named spider that spawns if you kill spiders. There is a named beetle that spawns if you kill beetles just north of the main goblin camp. There is a named bear that spawns if you kill the grizzly bear just north of the skeletons enough times. There is a named snake around the treehouse and is one of the toughest mobs on the isle, this one seems to spawn without killing placeholders. There is a named shark in the bay. There is the Chieftain up in the treehouse, a named goblin dropping weapons and armour. Last, there is the Orc in the cave and the ghost pirate Rockbelly, both are from quests.

Most mobs drop weapons and armour. They also drop tradeskill books which cannot be bought from merchants and contain recipes for stuff made from rare components.

8. When to leave the Isle

You can't level above 6 on the Isle but you will still gain experience in level 6 until you hit the cap at 220% experience. It has been found optimal to leave the island at 180%, you will gain the rest during the citizenship quest and jump to level 8 at completion.

To leave the island, first talk to the ambassador in the tavern at the bay. Then speak to Duke Ferrin just outside there. You are now ready to leave, go to the Mariner's bell on the north pier and rightclick it. This is the first part of your citizenship quest.
